College & Type 1 Diabetes

JDRF invites...

  • type 1 incoming college students
  • high school students
  • parents/caregivers

…to attend a very special program! A moderated panel of current college students and parents will share their stories and answer questions about living with diabetes at college. Diabetes health care providers will also participate and be available for medical Q & A.

When:   Thursday, August 19, 2010
Time:    7 to 9 p.m.
Place:   JDRF downtown San Francisco office (49 Stevenson St. Ste. 1200)
Cost:     FREE!  Refreshments will be provided

Separate breakout sessions for parents and students, facilitated by the medical professionals, will give each the opportunity to voice questions or concerns to their peers. The knowledgeable panel will ease the worries of both students and parents alike with their valuable insights into every topic imaginable, such as: dorm living and roommates, navigating new social situations, seeking out the best campus health resources — anything and everything a student needs to know to be prepared for a fun and healthy transition to college!

Taking "Control" Out of Diabetes

An evening with Jessica Bernstein, Psy.D.
Psychologist specializing in type 1 diabetes/chronic illness "Blood & Honey" documentary film director and producer Living with type 1 diabetes for 38 Years

DATE: Wednesday, September 15, 2010
TIME: 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
PLACE: Congregation Etz Chayim; 4161 Alma Street, Palo Alto, CA

In a controversial talk, Psychologist Jessica Bernstein sparks debate about our current method of approaching diabetes care with the goal of controlling the condition. Dr. Bernstein, who has had type 1 diabetes since age one, will discuss two key questions:

  • Is it possible to control diabetes?
  • Is it healthy to approach diabetes care with the mindset of trying to control the condition?

Through excerpts from her documentary film (now in production) entitled "Blood & Honey" (www.bloodandhoney.org), Dr. Bernstein will present varying views about the "myth of control." This talk will provide you with new ideas for approaching diabetes care that could improve the psychological experience of diabetes for anyone diagnosed with type 1 or 2 diabetes, adult or child.

Dr. Bernstein has a private practice in Oakland focused on people with diabetes.

RSVP to Rachel Cox at coxbr@aol.com or (650)329-0380.
